Alexandrite was first discovered on April 30, 1830 in along the banks of the Russian rivers. The gemstone is a 45th and 55th anniversary stone as well as the alternate birthstone for June. Besides being named after its ever-changing red to green colours, it was also named after Czar Alexander II. Despite it's original location, it is said that the highest quality Alexandrite come from Sri Lanka.
Alexandrite appears in various shades of green in daylight and appears in various shades of red in incandescent light. The more dramatic the colour change, the more valuable the gemstone. Brown or grey shades are known to devalue the stone.
The gemstone is known to have multiple healing properties involving; the spleen, stomach, nervous system, ulcer problems and fighting low self-esteem.
