the yellow sapphire mystery

We have been in the industry for over twenty years and although we don't claim to know it all we believe to have our fair share of knowledge. Until we had a client that was adamant he have a 4+ carat untreated natural yellow sapphire in a round, oval or cushion shape. We deal with specific requests often and we tailor to all sorts of client drivin guidelines but we found this request ultra specific. The mystery of these requests left us researching the mythology of the beautiful yellow sapphire.

The yellow sapphire is regarded as the best of gemstones much like Jupiter is regarded as the teacher of all gods. Jupiter represents wisdom, religion and wealth. It focuses on what one wants to achieve in life.  The wearer of yellow sapphire gets the knowledge of law, ethics, wit, wisdom, worldly happiness and mental peace. It is most beneficial to authors, writers and businessmen. The yellow sapphire energizes the concentration of the mind and gives warmth and protection to relationship. It can be used in healing various diseases like arthritis, heart problems and impotency. In Hindu traditions the yellow Sapphire is worn for marriage, boy or girl who are not married or their marriage is delayed for any reasons shall wear Yellow Sapphire. It is also worn for conjugal bliss.

Yellow sapphires are worn in Hindu and Vedic traditions. In both beliefs the yellow sapphire is used to bring great wealth and prosper to new marriage and business ventures. There are several recommendations to bring the most success to the wearer but both traditions have the same guideline to success:

  • The bearer should start wearing the yellow sapphire on a Thursday within an hour of sunrise.
  • Sapphire must be natural; no colour or heat treating.
  • The yellow sapphire should be a minimum of 2 carats but 4 carats is ideal.
  • If the yellow sapphire is being set into jewelry, it must be set in gold.
  • If the sapphire is set into a ring, it must be worn on the index finger of the right hand.
  • The yellow sapphire must be of extremely high quality.

Opal - October's Birthstone

"October's child is born for woe,
And life's vicissitudes must know,
But lay on opal on her breast,
And hope will lull those woes to rest."

The word opal is derived from the latin word "opalus" which means "a stone". The gemstone presents a unique play of colours and delicate tints. Opal also means "to see an change in colour". The opal occurs in several types of colours. The white opal is often associated with the pastel glints of the colours in a rainbow. The black opal has a blue, tray or black attributes. Fire and the crystal (also known as water) opal is colourless and almost transparent with sudden bright flashes of colour.

The October's birthstones traditional traits are said to be associated with hope, innocence, happiness, faithfulness, loyalty and confidence. The opal is reputed to have benefits related to health problems relating to the eye's vision and eye infections. Opals were used to enhance visualization, imagination, dreams as well as healing.

Gifts for Generations

A very close friend of ours (Mona's best actually) had struggled with cancer for a number of years and although the outcome was bleak we had still called Grace a survivor. Over the past few visits Mona had  been dealing with the estate as well as specific items she would have liked passed down. Clothes, furniture, decor, even adorned trophies and monies were not the first to be discussed as to who would receive them once passed; jewelry on the other had was one of the first. After every visit, Mona would return with handfuls of pieces that were to be refurbished, redesigned or resized and given to loved ones upon her departure from us. On each piece that we work on I get to learn more about Grace - the story behind each piece Mona is now wearing or learning about her little nieces that are so lucky to be receiving gold bangles and rings with an engraved message from Auntie Grace. Clothes will wear, dinnerware will eventually be put away, money will disappear but jewelry really does last forever.

In the happier circle of life my very best friend has recently been married. As a wedding gift I had designed a gold ring surrounded by her wedding date cut out in roman numerals. I liked the design and as a jewelry designer I had greater access to give her something special; but I didn't realize how special this gift could potentially be. I had overheard the wedding photographer ask Breanne if she was wearing any pieces of significance (something borrowed, something blue or a family heirloom) that she would like to be photographed and she immediately took off the ring that I had given her that morning and passed it to the photographer. I was so touched; but it made me think of Grace.

Over the months events I realized out of all items of inheritance, jewelry is one of the only items that can be passed on from generation to generation in much of the same condition as it was originally purchased. Jewelry signifies life's celebrations and turns of events. It represents a story and a moment and that's something to be cherished forever.

Push Presents - Practically Necessary

'Push Presents' are an increasingly hot trend for moms-to-be.

According to Linda Murray, the executive editor of babycenter.com, "It’s more and more an expectation of moms these days that they deserve something for bearing the burden for nine months, getting sick, ruining their body. The guilt really gets piled on." Now, not that many women think of child bearing as "bearing the burden" and "ruining their body" and often women will say that the gift of their child is a present enough. But wouldn't it be nice to receive a gift as a kind gesture and small token of thanks from your partner? When studied, 38% of women received a push present, 55% of women wanted one and 40% of women think it's materialistic only when demanded. In a recent article regarding the subject Jenny Atkinson says, "I certainly don’t “expect” a gift, but I think it would be a wonderful gesture for a husband to do to show a woman how much they appreciate what they’re putting their bodies through to help build their family."

In recent pop culture news it is rumoured that Jessica Simpson's former NFL'er dad-to-be, Eric Johnson has purchased a push present of $30,000 worth of jewels from a store in Italy, where they first fell in love. This by no means sets the bar for your partner to break the bank. Go for a gift that is personalized and stamped with meaning. A small family ring to look down and recall your thoughtfulness when she's away from you and the little one; or a pendant with your new baby's fingerprint for her to remember just how small that finger once was.

Aquamarine - March's Birthstone

Designers call it their favourite gemstone. It can be found Brazil, Nigeria, Zambia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Afghanistan and Pakistan. It’s a common birthstone to the Pisces.

Since early times, aquamarine has been believed to endow the wearer with foresight, courage, and happiness. It is said to increase intelligence and make one youthful. As a healing stone, it is said to be effective as a treatment for anxiety and in the Middle Ages it was thought that aquamarine would reduce the effect of poisons.
A legend says that sailors wore aquamarine gemstones to keep them safe and prevent seasickness.

Aquamarine has good hardness (7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale) and a wonderful shine. That hardness makes it very tough and protects it to a large extent from scratches. The lucid gem colour makes it easy to see inclusions making quality an important consideration. Iron is the substance which gives aquamarine its colour, a colour which ranges from an almost indiscernible pale blue to a strong sea-blue. The more intense the colour of an aquamarine, the more value is put on it.

Aquamarine is not only used for jewelry but has been also used in the art world. The “Dom Pedro” is shown below and was cut by Bernd Munsteiner to create the 10,363 carat sculpture named, Waves of the Sea.

Amethyst-February's Birthstone

The february born shall find
Sincerity and peace of mind,
Freedom from passion and from care,
If they, the amethyst will wear.

February's Amethyst Birthstone is said to protect its wearer against intoxication and seduction. The violet hues in this stone come from a purple quartz variety and can vary from light pink to deep purple. For many thousands of years, the most striking representative of the quartz family has been a jewel coveted by princes both ecclesiastical and secular. Moses described it as a symbol of the Spirit of God in the official robes of the High Priest of the Jews, and the Russian Empress Catherine the Great sent thousands of miners into the Urls to look for it. The greeks believed that amethyst protected the wearer against drunkenness and was often used in the carving of wine goblets. The name for the purple quartz originated from the Greek word 'amethystos' meaning 'not intoxicated'.
Amethysts are know to have properties of stability, peace, balance, courage and inner strength. The wearers of this birthstone are known to have traits of sincerity and a calm disposition.
Amethyst rates a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale
The healing properties of the birthstone are reputed to be effective for the following related health problems:
-Withdrawal symptoms of any sort of addiction.
-headaches
-insomnia
-Arthritis,
-Pain relief
-Blood circulation issues
